Student Name on Diploma
Emory University will print the student’s Primary/Legal Name on the diploma. Students may choose to display a different first name or middle name by creating a Diploma/Degree Name while completing the online degree application. The last name on the diploma must match the last name from their Primary/Legal Name. Students wishing an alternate last name on their diploma are advised to consider an official name change. For more information, please review the University's policy on student name changes.
Some professional licenses, certifications, and accreditations require that the name on the diploma matches the Primary/Legal Name. This is also a requirement by some countries if the diploma is used for visa processing or other official government purposes. Please consider whether any of these requirements apply before establishing a different Diploma/Degree Name.
If you realize your name is incorrect after the name change deadline, you must submit an official name change form and a request a replacement diploma through our Online Ordering Service. Effective January 1, 2022 a replacement fee of $75 is required at the time of request before another diploma can be ordered.
The name change deadlines for each term are:
- Summer - July 19
- Fall - November 15
- Spring - February 28

Diploma Authenticity
The diploma is an important symbol of academic achievement. However, Emory does not recommend that the diploma be accepted in lieu of an official transcript or degree verification. If you are presented with an Emory diploma as evidence of a degree, please feel free to contact the Office of the Registrar at diploma@registrar.emory.edu for verification of the document.
Replacement Diplomas
Alumni may request a replacement diploma if the original diploma has been lost or destroyed at a cost of $75 (effective January 1, 2022). To request a replacement credential, use the Online Ordering Service link to provide information about your credential. Once the request is received, requestors will be notified via email if it has been approved or denied. If the request is approved, the institution will place an order for that credential.
Replacement diplomas follow the format of the current Emory diploma and contain the signatures of current Emory officials. Replacement diplomas list the student’s name as it appeared on the student’s transcript. A statement of replacement is printed in the lower left of the diploma and is not visible upon the framing of the diploma. Replacement diplomas are typically delivered within 6-8 weeks. Please contact us for questions regarding replacement diplomas.

Holds on Diplomas
Final Degree Clearance: Degrees will be conferred and mailed only after final degree clearance has been received from the appropriate advising or divisional offices.
The following three holds will prevent receiving your diploma:
- Financial
- Student Loans (uncompleted Exit Interviews)
- Academic.
If you have any of these three holds on your student record you will not receive a diploma or transcript until the obligation has been fulfilled. However, this does not prevent your actual graduation or conferral of your degree. To resolve, please contact the department who issued the hold.
